1.- Interview with: TheGalleryOfEve

Introducing Eve (TheGalleryOfEve)

Charming and friendly, two excellent words to start describing Eve (TheGalleryOfEve).

I found her gallery through other fellow deviant. Her profile page caught my attention immediately. Her art, interviews and activities inside the community are pretty awesome. While I was reading the interviews she has conducted, I found inspiration to scale the numbers and kind of questions in my interviews, looking for a better way to knowing more about the interviewed artists.

I send her a note asking permission to use or rewrite some of her questions and to my surprise, she answered me in Spanish, our natural language. She was very friendly and understanding, and she gave me permission to use anything I need with no restriction at all.

Since then, we have shared some notes and talked through the regular DA messaging system, and every time she demonstrates an incredible good heart and gentile behavior, which is something she do with every person.

Summarize all her activities in just a few lines is a very hard task, since she is deeply active inside the community. She is the founder of the groups ArtInOurHeart and DD-Suggesters; and co-founder/contributor of AffiniTea, TutorialsForYou and The-Feature-Showcase. Last year she was actively involved with dAWishingWell, where she developed several new friendships. Nowadays, she is mostly dedicating her community effort, to the journal features dedicated to the "Angels Without Wings" project. Aside from that, she publishes interviews called "All about", where the interviewed people are current or former Community Volunteers, and some members from the DevianArt Staff. However, her biggest effort is centered in giving encouragement to her friends and watchers with positive feedback, looking for helping them to evolve as artists. She is also constantly involved as a contests judge.

She recently won the Deviousness Award, "in recognition of exemplary membership and an outstanding spirit of helpfulness and mentoring within the DeviantArt community". It is a great distinction and she really deserved it. Congratulations, Eve!

Interviewing Eve (TheGalleryOfEve)

Q: Hello Eve, welcome to the 7th issue of the People+Arts journal. It's a big pleasure to interview you. Let's start with two simple questions: who is Eve and how would you describe yourself?

A: Ooohhh it’s hard when we have to talk about ourselves :giggle: Well, I’m a DeviantArt addict!!! Born and raised in Argentina, and I now live in Florida, USA. I’m a very emotional person, living with my feelings on top of my skin, something that can be hard sometimes, but I wouldn’t change that aspect of mine at all! I’m a music lover! I usually listen to music when I’m creating artworks or doing features. And although I currently don’t have any pets, I adore animals, especially puppies and kittens, my favorite pups are the apple-headed Chihuahuas and my favorite kitty is the Persian Cat (the flatter the face, the better!!! :XD:)

Q: Which kind of art are you working with? Do you have an education in this kind of art, or are you self-taught?

A: I’ve been an Art lover since I can remember, creating things all my life, but I came to discover the world of Digital Art back in 2007, when a former co-worker of mine gave me a copy of the Adobe family of software programs to take a look and play around with them a little. Of course, going through those wasn’t easy because I had no idea of what I was doing, but once I found a few tutorials and saw the THINGS I was going to be able to do with that, I decided to buy my first copy of that family of software programs and began exploring Digital Art deeply. I’m now immersed in it and can’t think of anything else! I wish I had discovered all this when I was still in High School; back then I was completely lost and didn’t know what exactly was I going to study (ended up studying English to become a teacher). So no, I don’t have a formal education on Digital Art or any other form of art, I am self-taught, still learning new things on a daily basis!

Q: Why this kind of art? Which are the ingredients for success in this kind of art?

A: To me, Digital Art has become my passion for its versatility  I can give shape to things on my screen and then have it printed on either a canvas or a T-Shirt or anywhere I want! These days we can print things in 3D if we know how to!

The ingredients for success in Digital Art are similar to the ingredients for success in all other Art forms: Patience, practice, perseverance, focus, lots of trial and errors, and thirst for perfection! By that I mean, looking at our work thinking “Oh I could make this texture more realistic, or that line curvier, or this color brighter” etc, etc. You can have a lot of talent, but even the most renowned artists wouldn’t be where they are right now, if they hadn’t practiced and exercised all those previously mentioned “ingredients”!

Q: When did you start working with this kind of art? What was the motivation?

A: I started working with Digital Art in 2007, at first it all started as a playful thing, trying to see what was all that fuzz about Adobe. Up until that moment, I thought that Adobe was just a little logo that meant that some files were PDF files :giggle: So when I saw all the possibilities they offered and all the amazing things people were creating with those tools!!! MY GOODNESS!!! My jaw dropped to the floor in amazement!!! :wow: So I felt like an inner force that moved me right away to try and see what I could come up with  And that’s something I’ll never regret, something that has been like a blessing in my life, because now I feel that the sky is the limit to what I could potentially do, and I’ve never lost that sense of “awe” whenever I sit down at my desk in front of the screen with a blank canvas!!!

Q: Who or what has inspired your artistic life and why?

A: I grew up living with my Mom, my Grandmother and my Grandfather. Ever since I can remember, I was exposed to all forms of Art. My Mother was taking singing lessons and ended up reaching a Mezzo-Soprano voice level!!! She then took lessons of piano, and took a second job as a singer at our hometown Cathedral, singing for the weddings, a job that ended last year, after 32 years!!! My Grandfather was a Traditional painter, he was a calm man, I’ve never seen a human being as calm as he was, and his paintings reflected his inner peace. I remember seeing him painting his last painting at the age of 78, a present he made for one of his friends, a gentleman friend of the family who adored my Grandpa, and who had always expressed to him his appreciation for his Traditional works, so he made his last creation for him, a beautiful capture of the view of the house across the street, in his own style: serene as his soul! My Grandmother had special hands  She knitted beautifully! She made all my baby clothes, She took knitting and sewing lessons, so her works were works of art without a doubt! In her older years, she took on the craft of paper-flower-making  Something that she did with a lot of pride and joy along with her friends! I still have one of her lovely little flowers (they were “Carnations”). I could close my eyes right now and see my family creating things on a daily basis, for the simple joy of it!!!

Q: How would you describe your style? How has it evolved over the years?

A: My style is something I’ve been attempting to form and develop since I started. It’s not easy to “have” a style. At first I tried my best to emulate Traditional techniques with Digital tools, and I think I succeeded on my piece “Daydreaming Bird”, where I was able to make a Digital piece that looks as if it were Traditional Watercolor  But since the piece was born after several attempts, trying and trying new things, when I then tried to replicate the technique in other pieces, I felt as if it was almost impossible! :hmm: So since then I have abandoned that aspiration, and immersed myself deeper and deeper into Vectors, one of my current passions within Digital Art! I love Vector Art because it allows me to play with that Traditional emulation or just go with more contemporary Vector looks  Lately, I’ve been getting myself into Animation, which is my second passion within Digital Art  I love to see how a static image can start moving with the right keyframes and all the necessary tweaks that allow me to bring a little drawing to life!

Q: Do you start with a precise idea before any particular artwork or do you leave your creativity to flow freely?

A: Sometimes I start with a concept I’ve been thinking and thinking for a while, but that’s not always the case, the majority of the times I just sit down and start drawing something and after a little while I see forms and start getting ideas. It’s like when I write something (I write poems, but they’re personal, so I don’t post them publicly), I start with an empty page, and let the inspiration guide me!

Q: What are your tools of the trade?

A: My tools of the trade are my computer and my Wacom tablet  I use several software programs; Adobe Illustrator is my go-to program, I use it for everything! Then I also use Adobe Photoshop, it’s pretty handy, but I’m not as comfortable in it as I am in Illustrator. I then use Adobe After Effects for my animations, although lately I’ve been trying a program called “Animate Pro” which is absolutely amazing!!! Sometimes I use Corel Painter, but I haven’t used that one in a long time, I’ve immersed myself in the others so much, that I haven’t had the time to explore Corel Painter too much. I also have a camera that I bought years ago with the intent of taking “good” pictures and use them as stock to aid myself in my creative process, but for some reason I always end up illustrating things myself or using stock that looks more professional. I never felt that comfortable with Photography, so far it hasn’t been my strength, but it’s in my bucket list, so I’ll learn to take decent photos eventually!

Q: What would be the most valuable lesson you've learned in your artistic journey, so far?

A: The most valuable lesson I’ve learnt is that maybe “talent” has little to do with success, it’s practice, and the initiative of starting things, of knocking on doors throughout our lives, what will bring us the success we wish to have! In some aspects I can say I did learn this lesson, but it some other aspects, I’m still learning it, and I know it’s hard to get out of our comfort zone, but if we don’t do it, life will go on without our participation in it, and that’s not fair to ourselves!!!

Q: What kind of art do you like to watch and enjoy the most?

A: Ohhh I love watching Handcrafts and Polymer Clay in particular!!! I follow a few artists who are amazing at that, and I feel completely inspired by their skills!!! I also enjoy watching Photography  I have lots of Photographer friends, who work on all aspects of Photography, so seeing what they can create is something that I find amazingly inspired, even though I’m not a Photographer myself, I feel inspired to illustrate the things I see in their photos!!! Vector works are probably the ones I like to watch the most, along with Animations, and a few Traditional arts from specific Traditional artist friends!!!

Q: What reasons motivated you to create an account on DeviantArt and what keeps you wishing to stay?

A: I first browsed through DeviantArt quite a lot before deciding to open my own account. I felt motivated to show my creations to the world! And although I started on DeviantArt with the intent of becoming a “famous” artist, living off of my art :giggle: I ended up falling in love with the community relatively quickly, something that I was definitely not anticipating. In fact, I think it’s been a pleasant surprise to find so many friends and being able to interact with people from all over the world! I soon developed different feelings towards the site, it wasn’t just an “art website” any longer, it started to become the place I couldn’t live without!!!

Q: What do you enjoy the most about your own DeviantArt experience?

A: What I enjoy the most is the ability of interacting with people from all over the Globe, making new friends, exchanging views, encouragement, being inspired by them and even inspire them as well!!! This is something absolutely priceless!!! Do you imagine what the greatest painters in history would have been able to accomplish if they had a privilege like this one??? :wow: My goodness, we’re all truly lucky to have all these tools available in our lifetime! I couldn’t be more thankful to technology, for bringing me close to DeviantArt!!!

Q: Aside from DeviantArt, what brings joy into your life?

A: Family, friends, home life, music, simple things in life, like observing nature, going for a walk, swimming, roller skating (even though I don’t do that too often), movie nights with family and friends is fun, and although I don’t like traveling that much, I do enjoy it when I go see my Mom, because she spoils me rotten!!! :XD: :giggle:

Q: Thank you very much Eve. Can you leave a final comment to all DeviantArt members?

A: My tag line reads “Be kind to one another <3”, and it’s there to inspire you to practice that whenever possible. This site holds account from people of all kinds of races, languages, religions and cultures. Please keep this in mind when you’re interacting with someone from a different culture or language than yours, not everybody can write and understand English perfectly, so we can’t judge people for their choice of words all the time. Be kind towards others, you might be able to make friendships that will last a lifetime if you practice that!!! Remember to treat people the way you wish your loved ones to be treated, please don’t forget that! You won’t regret it, I can promise you that!!!
